General Erich Elster surrenders himself and 20,000 troops to Maj. Gen. Robert C. Macon of the U.S. Ninth Army and to Maj. Gen. O.P. Weyland, Commanding General of the XIX Tactical Air Command, on September 16. The formal surrender took place at the Beaugency Bridge on the Loire River.

STATEMENT: One small warehouse type building destroyed. One large warehouse type building destroyed. Two large warehouse type buildings and one small building destroyed. Two warehouse buildings severely damaged and others within the area blocked and at least 20 goods wagons have been damaged or destroyed. A single crater blocks a siding at (Q/100903). Through rail traffic is possible from DILLINGEN to NEUNKIRCHIN. ACTIVITY: 12 /T are visible in the vicinity; 3 marked with the “Red Cross” are in motion. Approximately 240 mixed goods wagons, flats, and 4 engines, one of which is in steam, are present. Some of the flats near the supply depot may be loaded with M/T. Ninth AF 2nd Phase Interpretation Report US10/D SPECIAL LOCALITY: NEUNKIRCHEN M/Y SORTIE: US 15/3959 DATE: 15 Jan 45, HOUR: 1300A PERIOD UNDER REVIEW: This report covers all damage to annotated area through 15 Jan 45. COVER: The M/Y is covered on prints of good quality. STATEMENT: Within the dotted lines is evidence of a terrific explosion. The area of devastation measures approximately 85 yards by 40 yards, and debris has been thrown for a distance of at least 250 yards. The central area of the explosion is so black that an accurate damage assessment cannot be made from this cover; however, at least fifteen damaged or destroyed wagons are visible, and many others have probably been blown to pieces. Four rail lines have been cut for a distance of approximately 120 feet. ACTIVITY: No activity is noted. 20th P. I. D. at Hq. 10th P. G.

Ninth AF 2nd Phase Interpretation Report US10/D 895 LOCALITY: VON RUNDSTEDT’S HEADQUARTERS SORTIE: US 12/4307 – 5001-14 TOT: 20 Mar 45, 1010A PERIOD UNDER REVIEW: This report covers all damage to date. COVER: The target is covered on prints of good quality. STATEMENT: Ground sources have reported this castle to be Von Rundstedt’s Headquarters. The east wing of the castle is completely destroyed and the entire top floor is demolished or gutted by fire. The small building just south of the “L” shaped building is destroyed and the top floor of the “L” shaped building is severely damaged. This building is completely destroyed. At least 11 dwellings are destroyed and 7 others severely damaged. ACTIVITY: Evidence of evacuation of the premises is noted as stacks of supplies are in the yard and several M/T are present. The large underground buildings to the NW remain undamaged. 20th P. I. D. at Hq. 10th P.G.

Kisselring's debut

Photos taken during and after the attack made on the Headquarters of the German Commander-in-Chief, West, by Thunderbolts of the 367 Group on 19 March. Interrogation of an officer PW later revealed that the 1,000 lb. Bombs which almost completely destroyed the headquarters, also wounded Field Marshal Kesselring, who had just replaced Field Marshal Gerd von Runstedt as C-in-C, West.

STATEMENT: The lower level wing of the “U” shaped building is severely damaged from a direct hit and the remainder of the building is gutted. Two small buildings have been completely destroyed. With only 200 feet between the top of the hill and a cloud base the Thunderbolts dropped their delayed-action 1,000 lb bombs so effectively that the station was almost completely destroyed. The primary beneficiaries were Ninth Air Force medium bombers who had long been bothered by jamming from this unit.
