Air Force Historical Research Agency Welcome to the Department of the Air Force (DAF) Legacy Vault

DAF Legacy Vault

We are excited to announce the development of a new digital space dedicated to showcasing the Department of the Air Force's (DAF) official archival records. This project highlights the rich and storied history of both the Air Force and Space Force, featuring historical records, artifacts, photographs, audio recordings, video documentation, and archival finding aids.

Although the page is currently under construction, our team is actively working to ensure it becomes a comprehensive and accessible resource for historians, researchers, veterans, and enthusiasts. We aim to make these valuable materials readily discoverable for those seeking insights into the DAF's contributions to our nation's history.

This initiative underscores our commitment to preserving and sharing the official ephemera of the Airmen and Guardians who have shaped the legacy of the skies and beyond. Updates will follow as the project progresses, and we look forward to unveiling more resources soon!

Airborne Assault on Holland
This document is an official reprint from a commemorative series that provides an interim report on the Allied airborne assault in Holland during World War II. It describes how U.S. and British airborne forces, including paratroopers and glider-borne troops, were organized to seize vital bridges over the Maas, Waal, and Neder Rijn rivers, thereby aiming to flank the German Siegfried Line defenses. The report details the meticulous planning behind the operation, including the selection of staging airfields, routing of troop carrier aircraft, precise timing schedules, altitude specifications for safe drops and landings, and the placement of navigational aids such as Eureka beacons and marker boats. It also covers challenges encountered from heavy enemy flak, counterattacks by German fighters, and adverse weather conditions that affected resupply and reinforcement missions. Furthermore, the document highlights the role of fighter escorts, air-sea rescue services, and the significant logistical efforts that, despite some losses, resulted in a successful concentration of forces and provided critical support to the ground advance in the campaign.
