Air Force Historical Research Agency Welcome to the Department of the Air Force (DAF) Legacy Vault

DAF Legacy Vault

We are excited to announce the development of a new digital space dedicated to showcasing the Department of the Air Force's (DAF) official archival records. This project highlights the rich and storied history of both the Air Force and Space Force, featuring historical records, artifacts, photographs, audio recordings, video documentation, and archival finding aids.

Although the page is currently under construction, our team is actively working to ensure it becomes a comprehensive and accessible resource for historians, researchers, veterans, and enthusiasts. We aim to make these valuable materials readily discoverable for those seeking insights into the DAF's contributions to our nation's history.

This initiative underscores our commitment to preserving and sharing the official ephemera of the Airmen and Guardians who have shaped the legacy of the skies and beyond. Updates will follow as the project progresses, and we look forward to unveiling more resources soon!

A Preliminary to War: The 1st Aero Squadron and the Mexican Punitive Expedition of 1916
During the Punitive Expedition of March–April 1916, the 1st Aero Squadron, led by Capt. Benjamin D. Foulois, deployed its eight Curtiss biplanes from Columbus, New Mexico to support General Pershing’s advancing columns. Arriving alongside limited motor transport from Fort Sam Houston and coordinated through intermediate bases such as Colonia Dublán, San Antonio de los Arenales, and Namiquipa, the squadron undertook reconnaissance missions, shuttleing dispatches and vital supplies across rugged terrain and adverse weather. Key personnel including Lt. Joseph E. Carberry, Lt. Edgar S. Gorrell, and Lt. Townsend F. Dodd faced technical challenges like defective engines and underpowered aircraft, forcing field modifications and emergency repairs to maintain communication lines with expeditionary cavalry units under Col. George A. Dodd. Their on-the-ground efforts and improvisation in addressing mechanical deficiencies directly influenced requests for more powerful airplanes and marked the early steps toward modernizing U.S. military aviation before World War I.
