Air Force Historical Research Agency Welcome to the Department of the Air Force (DAF) Legacy Vault

DAF Legacy Vault

We are excited to announce the development of a new digital space dedicated to showcasing the Department of the Air Force's (DAF) official archival records. This project highlights the rich and storied history of both the Air Force and Space Force, featuring historical records, artifacts, photographs, audio recordings, video documentation, and archival finding aids.

Although the page is currently under construction, our team is actively working to ensure it becomes a comprehensive and accessible resource for historians, researchers, veterans, and enthusiasts. We aim to make these valuable materials readily discoverable for those seeking insights into the DAF's contributions to our nation's history.

This initiative underscores our commitment to preserving and sharing the official ephemera of the Airmen and Guardians who have shaped the legacy of the skies and beyond. Updates will follow as the project progresses, and we look forward to unveiling more resources soon!

The Literature of Aeronautics, Astronautics, and Air Power
This comprehensive bibliographic work offers a detailed, era-by-era survey of aerospace history that spans early balloon experiments by the Montgolfier brothers, the Wright brothers' pioneering flights from Kitty Hawk and Dayton, the rapid evolution of practical airplanes during World War I, the growth of air transportation between 1918 and 1936, the strategic developments of the propeller-driven era and World War II, the dramatic technological shifts during the turbojet revolution and supersonic breakthroughs, and the maturation of the Space Age. The document provides meticulously annotated reference sources that include detailed chronologies derived from works such as those by Charles Gibbs-Smith and Tom D. Crouch, as well as official government studies on topics like precision bombing campaigns and aerodynamic advancements. It draws on contributions from key figures within the Air Force Historical Advisory Committee, including Lt. Gen. Thomas C. Richards and Mr. DeWitt S. Copp, and is associated with the Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards AFB in California, making it an essential reference that connects the evolution of aeronautics, astronautics, and air power to specific events, institutions, and personnel.
