Air Force Historical Research Agency Welcome to the Department of the Air Force (DAF) Legacy Vault

DAF Legacy Vault

We are excited to announce the development of a new digital space dedicated to showcasing the Department of the Air Force's (DAF) official archival records. This project highlights the rich and storied history of both the Air Force and Space Force, featuring historical records, artifacts, photographs, audio recordings, video documentation, and archival finding aids.

Although the page is currently under construction, our team is actively working to ensure it becomes a comprehensive and accessible resource for historians, researchers, veterans, and enthusiasts. We aim to make these valuable materials readily discoverable for those seeking insights into the DAF's contributions to our nation's history.

This initiative underscores our commitment to preserving and sharing the official ephemera of the Airmen and Guardians who have shaped the legacy of the skies and beyond. Updates will follow as the project progresses, and we look forward to unveiling more resources soon!

Air Force Heroes in Vietnam
This monograph presents a comprehensive narrative detailing the valor and sacrifice of the 12 United States Air Force Medal of Honor recipients during the Vietnam War. The work is organized into chapters that chronicle diverse air operations including the use of A-1 Skyraiders for rescue, close air support, and forward air control; the critical role of FACs flying the O-1 Bird Dog and OV-10 Bronco in target identification and coordination of precision strikes; the perilous Wild Weasel missions conducted by F-105 Thunderchief crews to suppress enemy surface-to-air missile sites; as well as daring helicopter rescues and cargo gunship operations utilizing HH-3 and AC-47 aircraft. In addition, the monograph covers the difficult experiences of prisoners of war and provides extensive Medal of Honor citations, detailed mission accounts, and historical context regarding the evolution of the award and the unique challenges faced by airmen operating in a counterinsurgency environment. The work underscores themes of selflessness, ingenuity, and relentless determination that not only saved lives but also significantly contributed to the operational success of air power in Vietnam.
