Air Force Historical Research Agency Welcome to the Department of the Air Force (DAF) Legacy Vault

DAF Legacy Vault

We are excited to announce the development of a new digital space dedicated to showcasing the Department of the Air Force's (DAF) official archival records. This project highlights the rich and storied history of both the Air Force and Space Force, featuring historical records, artifacts, photographs, audio recordings, video documentation, and archival finding aids.

Although the page is currently under construction, our team is actively working to ensure it becomes a comprehensive and accessible resource for historians, researchers, veterans, and enthusiasts. We aim to make these valuable materials readily discoverable for those seeking insights into the DAF's contributions to our nation's history.

This initiative underscores our commitment to preserving and sharing the official ephemera of the Airmen and Guardians who have shaped the legacy of the skies and beyond. Updates will follow as the project progresses, and we look forward to unveiling more resources soon!

General James H. Doolittle: The Air Force's Warrior-Scholar
This commemorative edition presents a comprehensive portrait of General James H. Doolittle, tracing his unique journey from his rugged early years in Alaska and his formative experiences as a boxer and aviation enthusiast to his groundbreaking accomplishments as a pilot, engineer, and leader. The document details his rapid rise during World War I after soloing within hours of flight training, his academic pursuits at the University of California and MIT that cemented his role as a pioneering test pilot with numerous speed records and innovative contributions to aircraft design, and his leadership during World War II, notably directing the daring carrier-based raid on Japan and commanding major air forces in North Africa and Europe. It also examines his postwar legacy as an influential advocate for a separate Air Force, his contributions in aerospace research and advisory roles with organizations such as NACA, and his transition to a successful corporate career. The narrative highlights his multifaceted achievements and enduring impact on military aviation, strategic air power, and technological progress.
