More About Our Roles and Responsibilities

The Accessions Division (AFHRA/AC) oversees the addition of incoming material to the AFHRA’s collection, creates metadata for the digital asset management system (DAMS), creates microform records, migrates various forms of media, and digitizes analog records. Due to the volume of offers that occur each day, we cannot accept unsolicited material dropped off at the Agency. Potential donors are encouraged to contact the archive with details about the items they wish to donate. The Accessions Division personnel then assesses the item’s relevance and condition. If the item is accepted, the donor and the archive agree on the terms of the donation, and the accessioning process begins. Donations can only be dropped off at the Agency after written coordination/confirmation with the Accession Chief or Document Control Team.

Please Note:

The Agency receives a large volume of inquiries each month and has a substantial backlog of unofficial requests. All requests are worked on a priority, first in, first out basis. The highest priority are those official requests originating from the White House, Members of Congress, the FOIA Program, the Office of Secretary of War, Secretary/Chief of Staff of the Air Force/Space Force, Major and Field Commands, and other Federal Government Agencies. Domestic, unofficial requests are worked before foreign requests, and it may take several months to receive a response. Be aware that in order to protect national security in today’s challenging environment, all requests, including those for unclassified information, will undergo a security review to determine releasability.

For general public, unofficial requests, please wait at least 120 days before inquiring on the status of your initial request.

Please click one of the links to the left to fill out the initial contact form for either Accessions or Research Divisions, or contact us by mail at:
