Air Force Historical Research Agency Welcome to the Department of the Air Force (DAF) Legacy Vault

DAF Legacy Vault

We are excited to announce the development of a new digital space dedicated to showcasing the Department of the Air Force's (DAF) official archival records. This project highlights the rich and storied history of both the Air Force and Space Force, featuring historical records, artifacts, photographs, audio recordings, video documentation, and archival finding aids.

Although the page is currently under construction, our team is actively working to ensure it becomes a comprehensive and accessible resource for historians, researchers, veterans, and enthusiasts. We aim to make these valuable materials readily discoverable for those seeking insights into the DAF's contributions to our nation's history.

This initiative underscores our commitment to preserving and sharing the official ephemera of the Airmen and Guardians who have shaped the legacy of the skies and beyond. Updates will follow as the project progresses, and we look forward to unveiling more resources soon!

Operation Ranch Hand: The Air Force and Herbicides in Southeast Asia 1961-1971
The document examines the execution and impact of Operation RANCH HAND, the aerial defoliation campaign conducted during the Vietnam War, focusing on its strategic implementation from bases such as Tan Son Nhut Air Base and Bien Hoa Air Base. It details the deployment of UC-123 aircraft equipped with spray tanks used to disperse herbicides, specifically Agent Orange, over jungle terrain to disrupt enemy concealment and logistics. Key personnel mentioned include Major Fred J. Bodet, who oversaw early mission planning, and Lieutenant Colonel James L. Lee, who managed aircrew coordination and equipment modifications for sustained operations. The report outlines tactical adjustments made by pilots, highlights the effects of the operation on enemy movement in regions like the Mekong Delta, and discusses the evolving concerns related to chemical exposure among military personnel and civilians. The study concludes with an assessment of the long-term environmental and health consequences attributed to the widespread use of herbicides in Vietnam.
