Air Force Historical Research Agency Welcome to the Department of the Air Force (DAF) Legacy Vault

DAF Legacy Vault

We are excited to announce the development of a new digital space dedicated to showcasing the Department of the Air Force's (DAF) official archival records. This project highlights the rich and storied history of both the Air Force and Space Force, featuring historical records, artifacts, photographs, audio recordings, video documentation, and archival finding aids.

Although the page is currently under construction, our team is actively working to ensure it becomes a comprehensive and accessible resource for historians, researchers, veterans, and enthusiasts. We aim to make these valuable materials readily discoverable for those seeking insights into the DAF's contributions to our nation's history.

This initiative underscores our commitment to preserving and sharing the official ephemera of the Airmen and Guardians who have shaped the legacy of the skies and beyond. Updates will follow as the project progresses, and we look forward to unveiling more resources soon!

Natural Defense: U.S. Air Force Origins of the Department of Defense Natural Resources Conservation Program
The study details how early Air Force conservation initiatives set the stage for the modern Department of Defense natural resources conservation program. It documents controversies such as the bison hunt at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, and legislative battles at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida that led to the enactment of the Sikes Act and the Engle Act. The narrative explains how leaders including General Henry Arnold, Lieutenant General Nathan Twining, and General Thomas D. White leveraged their backgrounds and outdoor experience to foster innovative conservation policies across military installations. It highlights the contributions of key conservation advocates and personnel such as Colonel Corey Ford and Lieutenant Colonel James N. Perkins, whose research on fish and wildlife programs at bases like Matagorda Island and Wendover, along with the expertise of advisor Elwood "Woody" Seaman and Major Russell "Rusty" DeGroat, provided the blueprint for establishing uniform hunting and fishing regulations in compliance with state laws. These efforts, coordinated with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other agencies, transformed military land stewardship into a model of environmental responsibility that continues to influence Defense Department policies.
