Seeing Off the Bear: Anglo-American Air Power During the Cold War

This publication was created from symposium proceedings called "Seeing Off the Bear," which was held in September 1993. It offers an insightful look into the enduring "special relationship" between the United Kingdom and the United States, recognizing it as one of the primary reasons for ultimate Western "victory" after the end of the Cold War. This publication compiles discussions that brought together active duty and retired military personnel, scholars, and private individuals from both nations.

The book is structured into three key sessions: "Policy Decisions," "Acquisition," and "Crisis Response," providing a comprehensive overview of this critical period. It provides a deeper understanding of significant historical episodes, including the initial buildup of the U.S. Air Force in the United Kingdom from 1948-1956, marking America's post-WWII presence, as well as the transfer of B-29 Superfortresses to the Royal Air Force under the Military Defense Assistance Program, illustrating early Anglo-American military aid and its impact on geopolitics.

Other topics such as the controversial deployment of Ground-Launched Cruise Missiles (GLCMs) to RAF Greenham, a detailed examination of Anglo-American air force collaboration during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the use of air support in the Malayan Emergency (Operation Firedog), and the political and public affairs repercussions of the El Dorado Canyon raid on Libya.

"Seeing Off the Bear," and similar scholarly works from this time period, underscore how despite frequently divergent policies, consistent national cooperation proved vital for peace and security throughout the Cold War and its aftermath. They further demonstrate the power of such lasting cooperative operations and joint preparation that continue through to the present day, informing future planning and decision making amongst the U.S.'s strongest allies.
