Commissioned Second Lieutenant, Cavalry, June 1906, and served to grade of Major, 1906-1917; transferred to Aviation Section, Signal Corps, August 1917.
Career assignments include: various duties as company and field grade officer, 1917-1935; Commanding General, GHQ Air Force, Langley Field, VA, 1935-1939; Air Officer, Eighth Corps Area, March-August 1939; Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations and Training, War Department General Staff, 1939-1940; Commander, Panama Canal Air Force, 1940-1941; Commander, Caribbean Defense Command and Panama Canal Department, 1941-1942; Commander, United States Army Air Forces in the Middle East, 1942-1943; Commanding General, United States Army Air Forces in European Theater of Operations, 1943. Killed in aircraft accident in Iceland. Andrews AFB, MD named in his honor.
Personal papers relating to Andrews' military career. Includes correspondence (1939-1942), scrapbooks (1906-1944, 1918-1943, 1933-1938), and photographs. Also includes several items relating the aircraft crash in which Andrews was killed, such as newsclippings, letters of sympathy, and memorials. Also contains memorial volume entitled Britain's Homage to 28,000 American Dead.
