Career assignments include: various duties as company and field grade officer, 1916-1940; with periods of duty in Office of Chief of Air Service (later Air Corps), 1925-1929 and 1933-1939; Chief of Air Services, HQ USAAF, 1941; Chief, Air Force Combat Command, 1942; Commanding General, Eighth Air Force, Commanding General, USAAF-European Theater of Operations; jointly Commanding General, Twelfth Air Force and Northwest African Air Force; Commanding General, USA Strategic Air Forces- Europe, Commanding General US Strategic Air Forces - Japan, 1942-1945; Commanding General, USAAF (later Chief of Staff, USAF), 1946-1948. Retired June 1948. Died in Washington, DC.
